Habit Haus

Our story

It started with a kitchen table and a lot of wax

Habit Haus is a creative workshop studio built on the idea that making something with your hands is the best way to spend an evening — and, as our guests keep telling us, one of the best ways to quiet your head.

Habit Haus, in motion

How it began

From one flat, one table, and far too much wax

2021

A kitchen table in Islington

In the middle of lockdown, I started making candles at my kitchen table in a flat in Islington. There was little else to do with my hands or my mind at the time, so I listed a few on Etsy with no particular plan — just something to fill the days that wasn't doomscrolling.

On the fourth day, Bella Mackie bought some. I hadn't anticipated that, and the orders that followed arrived far faster than I was prepared for. I cleared the table, ordered enough wax and wicks to fill the flat, and began making candles continuously.

That is genuinely how the business began: not with a plan, but with a kitchen table and more orders than I could keep up with. The twisting and bending that nobody else has replicated — that's where Bendy Boy was born, long before it had a name.

2022

The first workshop

I was asked to host a workshop for the first time. My instinct was to say no — I had only ever made candles alone, and hosting felt like an entirely different undertaking.

I said yes regardless and worked out the details afterwards. That has more or less defined how this business has grown from the beginning.

Now

Three cities, 6,000+ workshops

We started in London before expanding to my home country, Australia — first Sydney, then Melbourne. What began as one person working alone is now a team of nine genuinely excellent teachers, hosting workshops across three cities.

We've brought a sense of enjoyment into workplaces with workshops for major brands, and hosted hundreds of hen dos — one of the most meaningful parts of the work. There's something special about a group of women setting aside an afternoon to celebrate one another, with no pressure to be good at anything.

Habit Haus is female founded and entirely female run. Outside the business, I'm a mother to twin girls and a female dog, so it's fair to say I love The Girlies.

Offering people a place to step out of their heads and into their hands for an hour or two — that was true when I needed it myself, and it remains true for everyone who has walked through the door since.

What we care about

Colour first

Nothing beige. Every workshop looks like a party before anyone's picked up a paintbrush.

No experience needed

We don't need you to nail the perfect technique. We're here to get you out of your head and into your hands for two hours - and a little playful mess is the point.

Properly hosted

Fully insured to £10m, staffed by trained hosts, and organised down to the last napkin so all you have to do is show up and switch off.

FOUNDER - KICK STARTED US IN 2021

When Boris locked us indoors in 2021, I was having none of it, so I set about bringing colour to the house and, well, here we are. If we're really being honest though, I've been creative since my Mum sent me to Embroidery Camp (so embarrassing!) as a kid. A Proud Welsh-Australian, living in and loving London, mum to twin girls and a cute pooch named Pinot.
